Say Hello to Our New Staff!

Lauren Kennedy, Program Coordinator

We are thrilled to welcome Lauren Kennedy to our Bower Center team as Program Coordinator! Lauren will be the magic behind the scenes organizing our events and programs, from summer camps to concerts to workshops!

Lauren graduated from Liberty University in 2021 with a degree in Youth Ministry. Worked for nonprofit in Brunswick, GA the summer after graduation followed by a year as a substitute teacher in Greensboro, NC. Moved to Lynchburg, VA in August of 2022 and worked as a bank teller until three and a half weeks ago when she began here at Bower Center for The Arts!

Growing up in the performing arts, she would spend summers at a variety of arts camps. Doing theatre, singing in the choir, and a competitive dancer most of her life- Lauren believes that art in its most beautiful form is a pure expression of emotion. Whether that’s through a painting, a song or dance routine – it’s all an outlet for feelings. Being an introvert, she always had a tough time communicating but performing arts allowed her to completely let go of that anxiety as she found peace in being able to openly express herself through a character. She believes that the arts are vital in many people’s lives and are available to anyone and everyone. Whether you’re a graduate from SCAD or a single mom with a dream, there is truly no limit to a person’s potential – as long as there’s passion.
If you have the pleasure of running into Lauren around Bower Center, be sure to say hello and give her a warm welcome!

Amy Quesenberry, Communications
& Guest Relations Coordinator

If you've seen an uptick in our social media presence lately, then you've seen Amy at work already! With 10+ years of photography experience and a background in graphic design, web management, social media marketing, and guest relations- we are very excited to welcome Amy to our Bower Center team! If you stop by during our business hours, you're likely to find Amy at the front welcoming you into the building or running about creating content for our social media and website. Amy is a Smith Mountain Lake native and has grown up in the area playing bluegrass music with her family. Today she spends her free time playing electric bass with local band Christian Q. & The Groove alongside her husband, and chasing her two year old son Atlas. If you see Amy next time you stop into the gallery, be sure to say hello!

Upcoming Workshops & Classes!

Painting Water & Waves! Acrylic Workshop

Sunday, June 4th, 1-4pm

From trickling streams to crashing ocean waves, water can be a challenge to paint. Join us for an afternoon of exploration as we use various techniques to portray this ever-changing element. We will be using acrylic paint with brush and pallet knife on multiple canvases.

Class is designed for students of all experience levels and ages 16 and up.

Supplies are included in class fee.

Felt Bird Pods

with Dawn Edwards

Saturday, June 10th, 10am-4pm

Come and enjoy a fun day of wet-felting as you create a felt bird pod which is sure to be a hit with your feathered friends. The bird pod will be made of naturally water repellant wool. Small birds such as Wrens, Nuthatches, and Chickadees will use them for shelter and/or nesting.

This is a great introduction to 3D felting, employing the same techniques used in making hats, bags, slippers, etc. Watch as our flat felt pieces become three-dimensional.

Mosaic Stepping Stone Weekend Workshop

Friday-Sunday, June 23, 24 & 25

(See listing for times)

Mosaic a 12" square concrete paver for the base of a colorful addition to your garden. Glass and/or unglazed porcelain tiles will be used to create the mosaic. Considerations for exterior projects will be covered. Previous mosaics experience is not required for this workshop.
