Bring your family and join Bower Center & Opera on the James for Goldie B. Locks - An operatic version of the story of Goldilocks, based on scenes from operas by W.A. Mozart and  J. Offenbach.

Goldie B. Locks doesn’t just like bugs–she loves them. When a beautiful butterfly flutters off into the woods, she chases it, forgetting the promise she made to her mom to stay close to home. Ending up lost and alone, Goldie B’s story unfolds much like the traditional Goldilocks, but with one important difference. 

 Whereas the original Goldilocks never actually meets The Three Bears (other than to be discovered and run away), operatic Goldie begins to interact with the Bear family early in the story. Trying to find her way home after eating soup that isn’t meant for her, Goldie meets Peek, a little boy bear. Peek confides to Goldie that a sneaky robber had snuck into his family’s house that very morning, licked his spoon and eaten his soup. 

 Goldie is horrified, for she knows, of course, that she’s the soup thief in question. What should she do? Should she risk getting in trouble by telling the truth? Should she be less than honest and hope to avoid punishment? 

 After a bit of trial and error, Goldie realizes that honesty is her best choice. As Momma and Papa Bear (with little Peek in tow) take their new friend home to her mother, Goldie resolves to tell the truth always. Whenever troubles make her sad, she promises to share them with a trusted grownup, like a teacher, police officer, mom or dad. 

 Length: Approximately 40 minutes 

Appropriate for Pre-K through 5th grade

Opera on the James’ nationally recognized Tyler Young Artist Program is made up of singers chosen from hundreds of applicants for their high level of vocal, musical and theatrical skills. They are ambassadors for opera as an art form for everyone.

Opera on the James, celebrating its 20th Season, is an OPERA AMERICA Level Four Professional Company in Lynchburg, Virginia Opera, presenting work that enriches, inspires and challenges the cultural landscape of Virginia with mainstage, outreach and education performances and programming. Opera on the James is a 501c3 public charity.

Admission to this performance is FREE, but advance registration is appreciated for headcount purposes! Guests are welcome to attend without advance registration.
