July 12-16 THE ALLURE OF THE OCEAN

Instructors: Perri Mason (Drawing & Painting), Kathy Graham (Yoga and Movement), Barbara Quartrone ( & Clay)

Mermaids, pirates, shell covered beaches, stunning sea creatures, storm tossed sailing vessels.....what springs to your mind when you think of the ocean? We will be drawing and painting some of these elements of Ocean Life, using watercolor and maybe a handful of sea salt! We will also create clay sculptures of endangered sea creatures and sea life hand painted & decorated tiles. In Drawing and Painting - Let’s look at some contemporary art and learn how to use acrylic paint to create a giant ocean wave on canvas! Experiment with watercolor paint using sea salt, plastic wrap, and sea sponges to create textures in our “Under the Sea” paintings! Using actual seashells, we will create some designs using oil pastels and glitter water color paint!! In Yoga & Movement - Given that about three quarters of the Earth’s surface is covered in water and more than half of our own body IS water, let’s dive into the fun adventure of Ocean Yoga! We’ll explore and imitate how different sea creatures move through water and the other ways their bodies are designed to encourage survival. We’ll investigate the many ways OUR bodies move and how the water within us works to keep us healthy and thriving! While playfully presenting yoga’s physical benefits of increased strength, coordination, balance and body awareness, its mental benefits of better focus and concentration and its emotional benefits of less anxiety and more calm, this time together aims to foster the young person’s sense of self through movement and positive affirmations. Age-appropriate crafts/activities/books will complement what we are learning. In Clay we’ll learn about endangered sea creatures. Using various techniques we will form sea creatures from clay and glaze them. We will also shape, form or hand carve a tile from clay which will tell a story about the student’s chosen endangered sea creature.
