Through the LENS

August 24th - September 25th

     The Bower Center is excited to be hosting our first  judged photography exhibition on August 24-September 15.  People, animals, landscape or cityscape, action or still-life, documentary, humorous or sentimental, realistic or abstract are all represented! Judged by Jean Wibbens, a photographer in rural Virginia who exhibits fine art photography at local and national galleries.

Candace Monaghan: Bloom with Grace

   August 24th - September 25th

     Bloom with Grace is an exhibit that has grown out of an annual sunflower festival that Candace Monaghan has hosted for the past 5 years on her family farm in Botetourt County, Virginia. She has dabbled in nature photography for a few years and greatly enjoyed combining her newfound love for sunflowers.  This exhibit is featured in our Art Around the Corner Exhibit on the 2nd Floor.

  • Mosaics Basics (Adult)
    • Registration Deadline: September 10th
    • Learn the Basics of mosaics in this 6 week course that meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2-4:30pm Register>>
  • Mud & Fire Kids Clay Studio (Ages 6-10)
    • Registration Deadline: September 17th
    • Come explore the wonder that is clay! This class is a 6 week course that meets Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30pm. Register>> 
  • Wheel Throwing Clay Class (Adults, 15&up)
    • Registration Deadline: September 17th
    • Class is 6 sessions, starting September 21 - October 26 from 6-8pm. Prior experience throwing is needed to take this class. This class is designed for students who are comfortable behind the pottery wheel. Register>>
  • Youth Acrylic and Watercolor Painting (Ages 9-17)
    • Registration Deadline: September 20th
    • Have fun being creative with basic to advanced painting with 3 lessons in acrylic and 3 lessons in watercolor techniques. Students will begin with themes like animals, sea and landscapes, and Folk Art. Students are encouraged to explore and have input as to what they would like to paint. Register>>

Lenny Marus Trio in Concert

September 25th, 7-9pm   

     For the first time in well over a year, we will welcome live music back to the Bower Center.  Join us for the return of the Lenny Marcus Trio, along with special guests, Ken Hitchcock (flute and saxophone), and Sue Halloran (vocalist). They will join the Lenny Marcus Trio in doing a tribute to Chick Corea, a jazz piano master who passed away this year.

New Standard Bluegrass in Concert

November 20th, 6-8pm

     We are excited to welcome back New Standard Bluegrass to the Bower Center for our concert series after last years performance had to be canceled due to the pandemic. New Standard brings together a variety of styles and influences ranging from traditional artists to contemporary bluegrass and gospel artists.

Ronn McFarlane & Carolyn Surrick Christmas Concert

     The Bower Center is proud to host The Ronn McFarlane & Carolyn Surrick Concert on December 5, 2021. The partnership of Ronn McFarlane, lute, and Carolyn Surrick, viola da gamba, is one of shared mastery. Their remarkable partnership has led them to this newfound musical life – and that has led to a rethinking and recasting of what a holiday concert can be.

John Hardy: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, a one-man play for the holidays

December 18th, 6-8pm

    John Hardy, nationally known for his one-man play, Rattlesnake, is now touring with a new production, also a one-man play, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The production features Hardy playing over forty characters. A Christmas Carol, A One-Man Play, Adapted and Performed by John Hardy, runs approximately seventy five minutes and is performed in one act. It is appropriate for audiences of any age but is best suited for ages ten and above.

Entry Deadline: Nov. 13, 2021

“You were born an original. Don’t die a copy.” – John Mason

     Everyone wants to be seen, heard, and engaged with as a fully realized human being. Let’s explore the concept that we as people are genetically the same ( 99.9 percent according to the National Human Genome Research Institute) BUT ... we are different in how the world views and separates us. What are these differences? Race, sexuality, disability, gender, culture? How are we the same?  There is no entry fee for this exhibit.

Winter Gifts 2021

Entry Deadline: Nov. 13, 2021

      Winter Gifts is Bower Center's annual holiday fundraiser. 50% of each purchase goes to the Center and there is no entry for artists who participate. Size is limited to 14" in either direction, including frame. Artists may enter up to four artworks and as work is sold may replace them with new work.
