Beginners: Explore the art and basics of the clay craft that humanity has endeavored in for centuries. In this class, you will experience throwing on the potter’s wheel and learn to make useful pots that you can show to friends and family. You will also learn the basics of surface decorations, especially glazing. There will be demonstrations and hands-on work in the class. At the class’s end, you will enjoy the confidence to work with clay.
Intermediate: Explore the art of clay beyond the fundamentals and into the technicals. Learn how to understand details: execute your ideas, skill building with the material. Learn the means of manipulating clay to achieve desired results. This involves training your eyes to see which things matter, and why they make a difference. You will experience demonstrations of throwing more complex shapes, with hands-on opportunities. At the class’s end, you will enjoy the confidence of a well-rounded potter, knowing the complexities, opportunities, boundaries, and limitations of clay and be able to demonstrate higher craftsmanship.
MATERIALS LIST
Students will be provided with a 25 lb bag of stoneware clay (cones 5-6) and a variety of glaze options.

Kilian excels in authentic pottery, uniquely crafting his glazes and clays, a testament to his dedication. This mastery has yielded significant achievements, including a commission from North Carolina's Cultural Resources for their definitive heritage poetry collection. His museum-quality work has been featured in the Imperial Art Centre's HANDCRAFTED Exhibition in 2017, 2022, and will be again in 2025, confirming his status as a leading contemporary ceramicist. He also serves as a ceramic authority and interpreter for Popular Forest, and a commemorative partner of VA250. From his fully-equipped studio in Chatham, VA, Kilian continues to elevate heritage pottery, setting a high standard of excellence and preserving a vital aspect of American art history.
