Intermediate Adult Wheel Throwing

Intermediate Adult Wheel Throwing

Tuesday, August 27, 2024 (6:30 PM - 8:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Explore the art of clay beyond the fundamentals and into the technical. Learn how to understand details: execute your ideas, and build skill with the material. Learn the means of manipulating clay to achieve desired results. This involves training your eyes to see which things matter, and why they make a difference. You will experience demonstrations of throwing more complex shapes, with hands-on opportunities. At the class’s end, you will enjoy the confidence of a well-rounded potter, knowing the complexities, opportunities, boundaries, and limitations of clay and be able to demonstrate higher craftsmanship. NOTE: You must be able to center clay and throw standard bowls and cylinders with 1.5 pounds to enroll in this class. In this class, the instructor does more of his instruction by ‘showing you’ not by ‘telling you’ unless you need more assistance.

MATERIALS LIST

Students will be provided with a 25 lb bag clay (cones 5-6) and a variety of glaze options.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Kilian was awarded the "Heritage Artist" of IBXArts in 2010 and "Artist of the Year" by Scuppernong Gazette in 2009. His family was featured in the nationally noted NC magazine, “Our State.” Kilian specializes in early American heritage pottery (www.newnationpottery.com). A major difference in Kilian’s work has been based on authenticity. He develops his glazes and clays and has been unfettered by conventional training. Kilian started in clay at the tender age of eight and opened his ceramic studio in 2007 in the Inner Banks of North Carolina. His experience has yielded many accomplishments, such as creating the heritage pottery collection commissioned by North Carolina’s Cultural Resources for historic heritage sites, acceptance into Mino, Japan's International Ceramics Festival, and exhibiting his museum pieces in the exclusive Imperial Art Centre's HANDCRAFTED Exhibitions. He operates a fully outfitted studio in Chatham, VA.
