Pottery as Art Workshop with Thomas Kilian

Pottery as Art Workshop with Thomas Kilian

Friday, June 14, 2024 (5:30 PM - 7:30 PM) (EDT)

Description

This two-hour workshop explores pottery as a necessity in function and human expression. Whether you are a pottery nerd, an admirer of all things art, or a philosophy student, this workshop provides general working ideas for modern pottery by looking at the history of folk pottery. Get ready to receive a refreshing respect for functional wares that translates the human experience. Travel with Kilian from ancient East Asia and the Middle and Greater East to ancient Greece, England, and the Mississippi to find what pottery has to say about beauty and people. The workshop accumulates into a hands-on session, providing an opportunity to create 2D motifs and modeling surface designs, such as ‘slipping,’ ‘reliefs,’ sgraffito, and intaglio. Kilian will offer 2D and 3D demonstrations and real-time feedback. At the end of the workshop, you’ll be prepared to go to the studio and grace your pottery with a more dynamic and signature appearance. This is not an academic workshop but it would look great on a resume! For ages 16 and up!

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Kilian was awarded the "Heritage Artist" of IBXArts in 2010 and "Artist of the Year" by Scuppernong Gazette in 2009. His family was featured in the nationally noted NC magazine, “Our State.” A major difference in Kilian’s work has been based on authenticity. He develops his glazes and clays and has been unfettered by conventional training. Kilian started in clay at the tender age of eight and opened his ceramic studio in 2007 in the Inner Banks of North Carolina. His experience has yielded many accomplishments, such as creating the heritage pottery collection commissioned by North Carolina’s Cultural Resources for historic heritage sites, acceptance into Mino, Japan's International Ceramics Festival, and exhibiting his museum pieces in the exclusive Imperial Art Centre's HANDCRAFTED Exhibition of 2017 and 2022. Kilian specializes in heritage pottery and the history of the pottery trade. He operates a fully outfitted studio in Chatham, VA while showing internationally.
